On a lighter note, here are your updates on the UK and Global economies:
UK ECONOMY
- Thames Water has had its £3bn loan approved (think opportunity cost)
- The Pound Sterling has climbed above $1.30 for first time since November (think SPICEE)
- 1mn fewer people will secure health benefits under the new UK welfare reform (think about whether this will improve government debt)
- Fun fact: Pulled Pork and VR Headsets have now joined the CPI Inflation basket!
GLOBAL ECONOMY
- US consumer confidence is low - Consumer spending fell by 1% last quarter and foot traffic to US stores has fallen 4.3% in the last year.
- Indonesia's stock index has fallen more than 4% this week despite expansionary monetary policy (how effective is monetary policy if consumer confidence is low?)
- China's contribution to global oil demand growth has declined from over 60% to under 20% in 2024, primarily due to the rise of electric vehicles.
